The UC Berkeley library system is a vast yet easily navigatable resource, with more than 9,000,000 books and 89,750 serial publications (magazines, periodicals, and newspapers), and millions of manuscripts. The system has sound recordings, videos, and rare paintings. It is also a resource which, with a few restrictions, is available to the community. Visitors may use the library's online catalogs, CD-ROM stations, microfilm readers, and collections on site at no charge. To use the main stacks and Moffit Library collections, visitors must obtain a courtesy day-use pass from the Research and Information Service Center on the first floor of Doe Library. A valid photo ID is required. The Bancroft Library requires two pieces of identification

The Library offers free drop-in classes on using the library catalogs and Internet resources.  Schedules are available online

How can students participate in civic and community affairs?

There are many ways for Cal students to get involved in local community and civic affairs:

Get to know your city government.
The City of Berkeley operates under a "council-manager" form of government. The legislative branch, the City Council, appoints the City Manager whose responsibilities include enforcement of ordinances and preparation of the annual budget, along with administration and coordination of the City's operations.

The Berkeley City Council consists of eight Councilmembers, elected by geographic districts for four-year terms, and the Mayor, elected "at large." The Mayor is the president of the Council and votes as an individual ninth member. Municipal elections are held every two years.

Explore a civic internship
The Cal in Berkeley Student Internship Program places Cal students in internships with local government and nonprofits in conjunction with a weekly for-credit seminar.  For more information, call (510) 643-0307.

Serve on a city board, commission, or task force
There are over 40 City of Berkeley boards and commissions that meet regularly and advise the City government on a wide range of public policy issues and constituent concerns. Board and Commission members are appointed by the Mayor and Councilmembers.

Volunteer locally
The Cal Corps Public Service Center on campus links UC Berkeley students with the community in literally hundreds of ways and provides information about volunteer opportunities.  Each year over 10,000 Cal students volunteer their time to help local community-based organizations, schools, and others.
Service-learning courses offer opportunities for community service as part of the course requirements.

Participate in your neighborhood association
There are several neighborhood associations in the immediate campus area and many more throughout the City of Berkeley that meet regularly to discuss resident concerns.  These groups are a great way to meet your neighbors and build community. For information on neighborhood associations in your area, visit the City of Berkeley neighborhood organizations webpage or call the UC Office of Community Relations at (510) 643-5299.

Voter registration applications can be picked up at any post office, public library, or fire station, or you can have one mailed to you by contacting the Registrar of Voters at (510) 272-6973 or the League of Women Voters.  There is also an election information page on the City of Berkeley website.
