Mission

The mission of the Office of Community Relations is to promote mutual understanding and supportive relationships between the University of California, Berkeley, and its neighboring communities. The office plays a key role in communicating the University's policies, projects, needs, and contributions to the surrounding Berkeley and East Bay communities, and reflecting the community's needs and concerns back to the University.

Community Relations staff promote public service projects and activities of mutual benefit to the campus and community, provide appropriate contact points on campus for public inquiries and requests for services, coordinate the campus's response to local governmental and community issues, and advise other campus units on issues of local concern.

The Office of Community Relations regularly communicates with elected officials and community leaders and organizations in Berkeley, Albany, Richmond, and Oakland, and monitors issues, serving as the campus liaison. Staff members work with local community groups and agencies, such as the Berkeley and Oakland Chambers of Commerce, the Telegraph Area Association, the Downtown Berkeley Association, the Rotary Club, and many others. The office looks for ways to communicate with local and regional constituencies and encourages partnerships between the campus and community.
