Break The Cycle (BTC) is an academic after-school tutorial program in mathematics which aims to change the belief that historically low-achieving students cannot excel at mastering grade level expectations articulated by the California State Department of Education.
Undergraduate UC Berkeley tutors provide individualized instruction that complements the student's daily in-class instruction using targeted curriculum aligned with the state's grade level requirements.
BTC's partner schools have large numbers of students who are historically underachievers and are underrepresented at the University of California, especially in the fields of math and science. Working with undergraduate tutors, these students see that college is a realizable dream. The program builds an academic foundation that will enable these children to become competitive University of California applicants.
Its goals are achieved through the collaboration of students, motivated undergraduates, the BTC staff, and support from individuals and organizations in the greater community.
Currently, Break the Cycle serves students enrolled at Malcolm X Elementary School in Berkeley. For further information, please contact BTC.
