Women's basketball delivers Cal spirit

When a fire hit Ayers Elementary School in Concord, Principal Karen Sakata, a UC Berkeley graduate who played on the women's basketball team in 1972, lost a large blue and gold Cal banner which had hung in her office.  An Ayers teacher wrote the university asking for help in replacing the beloved banner.

A letter of sympathy and support from Chancellor Berdahl was sent to Sakata and the school community, which lost offices and classrooms in the fire. In December, Cal basketball Coach Caren Horstmeyer and player Leigh Gregory visited the school to deliver a new banner, a signed ball, and 1,200 free tickets to the women's basketball game against the University of Oregon, which Berkeley won 61-57.

The team is in the middle of a fast and exciting season.  Hometown fans can catch the action on January 29 vs. Washington State, January 31 vs. Washington, February 19 vs. UCLC, and February 21 vs. USC.  The USC game is free for youth 17 and under.
