Community Bulletin Board

ASUC art studio open to public
Since the 1960s, Cal's ASUC Art Studio has offered affordable memberships to the public. The studio, located on the lower level of the MLK Student Union Building at the Telegraph Ave. entrance to campus, has a fully equipped pottery studio and photography labs staffed by professional artists. In addition, it offers classes in ceramics, photography, digital photography, drawing, painting, video, and special media. Several new courses are being offered this spring, including Introduction to Knitting, Introduction to Photography with Digital Cameras, and Throwing with Porcelain

Of particular note in January is the "Kick Off" of the 2003-04 Lunch Poems series, featuring a diverse line-up of Berkeley faculty reciting their favorite poems, plus subsequent readings by poets Robert Thomas and Michael S. Harper; the latest "Bear in Mind" program featuring Chancellor Berdahl and guests; the full performance of Kawit Legong: Prince Karna's Dream Performed by Gamelan Sekar Jaya, a work commissioned by UC Berkeley's Cal Performances; and a timely panel discussion from "The Empire Dialogues" series, featuring Tariq Ali and others discussing the implications of U.S. policy
worldwide.

Children's summer programs

UC Berkeley Extension
UC Berkeley Extension offers over 700 courses and programs. Among this semester's highlights are courses in Classic American Poetry, From Whitman to Plath; Visions of Paradise: The Gardens of Morocco and Spain; and Complementary and Alternative Medicine: a Survey of Healing Practices. Start dates are staggered, so check for details

The following are one-day seminars offered by UC Berkeley Extension:

  • March 4: Family Mental Illness and Children: Silence, Stigma, Communication, and Resilience.  UC Berkeley psychology professor and author Stephen Hinshaw draws from personal family experience to examine the effects of mental illness on families. Family members and clinicians alike are invited to participate. UC Berkeley Extension International Center, 2222 Harold Way.
  • April 18: The Bush Presidency and the 2004 Election.  Join a panel of leading presidential scholars and White House reporters as they assess the past year of the presidency and the outlook for the 2004 presidential election. Presented by the Institute of Governmental Studies and UC Berkeley Extension. 155 Dwinelle Hall, UC Berkeley campus.
