| Under Construction
Student housing and seismic safety continue to be the focus of campus construction efforts. Helping to meet both objectives, a new student dining facility on the south side of campus opened in January. Designed to remain functional after an earthquake, the facility provides meals for the students living in the surrounding residence halls and offices for Residential and Student Services. Campus staff should be completely moved in by the end of March.
Seismic Replacement Building
A Seismic Replacement Building at Hearst Avenue between Oxford and Walnut Streets will house staff, faculty, and students temporarily moved from campus buildings that are undergoing seismic retrofitting. The steel frame of the three-story building is up; construction continues with the installation of building utilities and work on the frame. The sidewalk along Hearst will remain closed for the duration of construction. The building is expected to be complete in fall 2003.
Southside housing Units 1 and 2 (Durant/Channing and Haste/Dwight)
The University is adding three residence halls along Durant Avenue, Channing Way, and Haste Street. Apartment-style housing will be added on Dwight Way. Demolition of the dining commons, located in the center of each set of buildings and rated seismically “poor,” is complete at Unit 2 and underway at Unit 1. Work on the foundations of the new buildings will continue into the spring. For details and regular updates on these projects, visit www.housing.berkeley.edu/construction.
Stanley Hall replacement
Located at the campus’s east gate, the new Stanley Hall will be a hub for interdisciplinary scientific research and teaching as part of the campus Health Sciences Initiative. Demolition of the existing Stanley Hall is expected to begin in March. The new facility is due to open in late 2005.
Please note: The work hours for campus construction projects are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-8 p.m. weekends and holidays, in accordance with the City of Berkeley noise ordinance. All projects will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff.
