Emergency warning siren UC Berkeley is implementing a network of sirens and communications links, known as an alerting and warning system, to serve the community in the event of an emergency. The sirens are audible for up to a mile from campus. During an emergency, sirens will be activated. Anyone who hears the siren should seek shelter immediately and shut all doors and windows. Update information will be available from the emergency information line at (800) 705-9998, from KALX radio at 90.7 FM, and online at http://emergency.berkeley.edu. Sirens will be tested regularly at noon, the first Wednesday of each month, beginning in February 2003. |

| Gay Bears A new web site, “Gay Bears: The Hidden History of the Berkeley Campus,” tells the story of sexual minorities who have studied, taught, worked, and visited the Cal campus virtually since its beginning. The project grew out of a gay/lesbian-themed tour of campus which staff members William Benemann and Steve Finacom created last spring. “When we prepared for the tour, we were surprised at how rich the campus was with gay and lesbian associations, and how few of them were known,” recalls Finacom, a planning analyst in Capital Projects who pursues UC history projects on his own time. Among the entries are sugar heiress Annie Alexander, who helped establish the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology and the Museum of Paleontology; Hubert “Jay” Stowitts, class of 1915, who was “discovered” as a dancer that year by the famous ballerina Anna Pavlova; and writers James Baldwin, Willa Cather, Gertrude Stein, and Thornton Wilder.
