Campus construction highlights

The following are facilities projects now in construction or scheduled to start soon on the edge of the central campus or in outlying properties:

Goldman School of Public Policy - Annex
Construction on the new western addition, which will house faculty offices, classrooms and lecture halls, is expected to begin early 2001. The first phase will involve soil grading and dirt removal.

Barker Hall Seismic Project
A seismic retrofit and upgrade of Barker Hall at the northeast corner of the campus is underway; construction began in December 2000 and will be completed by Spring 2002. Roto-hammer work, which is noisier than regular construction, will start no earlier than 8:00 am and end by 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by March 2001. For safety reasons, the crosswalk across Hearst Avenue east of the Hearst/Oxford intersection will be removed during the project, and the right-turn lane from Oxford onto Hearst is closed during construction and bus and shuttle stops have been relocated.

Memorial Stadium Lights
The University is continuing to explore permanent, retractable lighting for Memorial Stadium and is seeking bids for the project.

Underhill Area Projects
In November, the UC Regents reviewed and approved designs for a new Central Dining and Office Facility and additional student housing at College and Durant Avenues. Together with relocating the historic Fox Cottage, these are the first of the Underhill Area Projects, which when completed will add housing for 870 students, parking for up to 1000 vehicles, and a playing field atop the parking structure.
  • Fox Cottage. Work began in December to reinforce and prepare Fox
Cottage in the southside to be moved across the street next to the
historic Shorb House at the corner of Bowditch and Channing Way. The
move is scheduled to be completed by March 2001.
  • Central Dining Facility. A new, seismically safe dining facility at
Bowditch and Channing Way will be constructed to serve students
living in Units I and II. Site preparation is expected to start in
    Spring 2001.
  • College-Durant Student Housing. This new housing consists of 30
apartments with suites from two to six-bedrooms. Each unit will have
its own kitchen and common room. Construction is scheduled to begin
    in Spring 2001.

All projects will adhere to strict regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes and storm water runoff. If you havequestions or concerns about campus construction, please contact UC Berkeley's Capital Projects at 643-4793, or visit its website at www.pdc.berkeley.edu.

Berkeley Art Museum
The Berkeley Art Museum, located on Bancroft Avenue, will undergo a $4 million seismic retrofit starting in April 2001. The work will improve the building's safety and allow the facility to remain in its current location while officials investigate building a new museum. The museum galleries will close May 28 and reopen in stages, beginning in late August. The Pacific Film Archive has already moved to a temporary building on the main campus west of the Hearst gym.
