With an employee headcount in the vicinity of 13,500, UC Berkeley is one of the largest employers in Alameda County and among the top in the Bay Area. In 2001 alone, the campus listed roughly 2,000 staff openings and hundreds of academic positions. In addition, it hired many temporary employees.
This year, the university expects to fill fewer positions due to the state's budget forecast. Chancellor Robert Berdahl has asked the university's administrators and department heads to take great care in considering the need for all new hires.
However, even under the restrictions, the university will continue to hire new employees if they are needed to maintain academic quality, are essential to carrying out the university's mission, or are critical to support health and safety on campus. In addition, the university will continue to fill positions that are funded by federal or private sources, including many positions in research.
UC Berkeley offers an excellent benefit package: low-cost health, vision, and dental insurance; legal expense and life insurance; 12 official holidays; 18 days of vacation the first year; and 12 days of sick leave annually. The university is open to flexible hours and through its staff internship and training programs encourages employees to move ahead and grow on the job.
Employees also have access to the Recreational Sports Facility on Bancroft and discounts at the Golden Bear and Strawberry Canyon Recreational Centers. Staff members are eligible for discounts on courses taken during regular session, summer session and at UC Extension. Employees have free library privileges in the university system and discounts at sporting events. The UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the Lawrence Hall of Science, the UC Botanical Garden, and the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology all offer employee discounts on tickets and membership rates.
Working on campus offers other rewards. Home to 30,000 students,UC Berkeley is where the action is: soapbox speakers, rallies, poetry readings, open-air student a capella concerts, the Cal band, street performers and the campus itself - it is a beautiful work setting.
