Women’s Softball team defends its title
Last year Cal’s women softball team brought home the gold. In their 17th straight NCAA Regional tournament bid they were proclaimed the 2002 NCAA champions after defeating Arizona 6-0. This year as defending national champions they are determined to keep the title. In pre season play the No. 7 ranked Bears posted a 28-7 record. League play was scheduled to start at the end of March. Among the top players is first baseman Veronica Nelson, a Bishop O’Dowd graduate and All-American, who, with 108 walks last season, holds the collegiate record for individual season walks. Watch also for pitcher Kelly Anderson and All-American catcher Courtney Scott who has been called “a brick wall behind the plate.” Last season, Scott committed just one error in 575 chances. In February, Nelson and Scott were among 40 national players placed on the initial watch list for the 2nd annual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award by the Amateur Softball Association. This award, which is considered the Heisman Trophy in women's collegiate softball and is the only national player of the year award, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Home games are played at Levine Fricke Field just above Memorial Stadium. Weekend Pac-10 games cost $5 for adults, $3 for youth and seniors. Remaining Home Games
