Under Construction

Construction continues around the campus with the start of new projects: Stanley Hall science facility in the northeast corner of campus, and apartment-style student housing on the southside. Here are some highlights:

Stanley Biosciences and Bioengineering Facility
Located at the campus’s east gate along Gayley Road, the new Stanley Hall is envisioned as an interdisciplinary hub for scientific research and teaching under the umbrella of the Health Sciences Initiative. Demolition of the existing Stanley Hall began at the end of March. Clearance of the site and excavation for the new building will continue through the summer. Truck traffic related to this project will follow a route on the north side of the campus that was established in consultation with the city of Berkeley. The facility is due to open in early 2006.

Channing-Bowditch Student Housing
The Channing-Bowditch Student Housing project will add apartment-style living for approximately 230 students. Located on Channing Way near the corner of Bowditch Street, next to the historic Shorb House, the facility includes two south-facing courtyards, covered bicycle parking, study lounges, and recreation and laundry rooms. The sidewalk and parking lane in front of the construction site will be closed for the duration of construction; two-way vehicle traffic on Channing Way between Bowditch Street and Telegraph Avenue will be maintained. Occupancy of the new facility is planned for fall 2005.

Seismic Replacement Building
A Seismic Replacement Building at Hearst between Oxford and Walnut Streets will house staff, faculty, and students temporarily moved from campus buildings that are being seismically retrofitted. The exterior panels for the building are in place, and installation of windows will continue through the end of April. Utilities work in support of the new facility includes EBMUD work on a water line on Oxford Street, and sewer and storm-line work on Walnut Street, which will take place inside the construction area. The sidewalk along Hearst will remain closed for the duration of construction. The building is expected to be complete in fall 2003.

Units 1 and 2 (Durant/Channing and Haste/Dwight)
The University is adding three residence halls along Durant Avenue, Channing Way, and Haste Street between Bowditch Street and College Avenue. Apartment-style housing will also be added along Dwight Way. Work on the foundations of the four new buildings will continue into the spring. Construction will include frequent concrete pours, which will cause some disruptions to traffic circulation in the area. The project team is working with city of Berkeley staff to minimize disruptions due to construction. For details and regular updates on these projects, visit www.housing.berkeley.edu/construction.

Please note: The safety of all in our community is of paramount importance. Drivers should reduce their speed in all construction zones. We ask pedestrians to please use sidewalks and walkways and cross only in crosswalks. Pedestrians should not walk in the street next to construction sites.

Work hours for campus construction projects are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. weekends and holidays, in accordance with the city of Berkeley noise ordinance. All projects will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff. Project staff are taking every measure to minimize the impacts of construction on our neighbors. We appreciate your patience.
