Bear in Mind
Once a month, UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl addresses the community
with a webcast, interviewing campus newsmakers and concluding with
an issue “on his mind.” Recently he interviewed Harry Kreisler,
executive director of the Institute of International Studies, about
U.S. foreign policy generally, and specifically regarding Iraq; senior
Ankur Luthra about how to win a Rhodes scholarship; and Mary Ann Mason,
dean of the Graduate Division, about graduate issues and her research
on how having children affects faculty women’s tenure-track choices — and
chances. Chancellor Berdahl then discussed the need for political discourse
in the midst of the “war on terrorism.”

University Village development moving forward
The firm of Allen & O’Hara has been selected to head a team
to develop a 26-acre mixed-use project at University Village, along
San Pablo Avenue in Albany. The proposed project includes 587 units
of rental housing for 1,034 graduate students and 30 units of rental
housing for junior faculty at UC Berkeley. The project will also incorporate
70,000 square feet of commercial development, as well new community
and administrative facilities. Recreational and open space features
include park land, new Little League fields and the restoration of
the two creeks that run through the site.
The next step is the preparation of an environmental impact report.
Following the environmental review and approval by the UC Regents,
groundbreaking is expected in 2004.
