Excellent information available on UC Berkeley websites
Recently a number of new Cal websites have been added to the UC Berkeley home page.

War with Iraq. UC Berkeley is proud of its historic role in encouraging the free and open exchange of ideas. The situation in Iraq has intensified debate and discussion around campus. This website is a clearinghouse for information, resources, and announcements concerning campus efforts and policies to promote dialogue and learning in a climate of civility and tolerance. To visit, go to http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/ iraq/

Cal in the Community. A guide to more than 200 community partnerships and campus resources available to the public, this website by Cal’s Office of Community Relations features programs ranging from transportation to entertainment, and education to health, with contact information and other helpful tips. Go to http://calinthecommunity. berkeley.edu

Cal Marketplace. A shopper’s delight, this site offers a variety of goods and services online: theater and athletic tickets; hats, coffee mugs, and jackets emblazoned with bears and big Cs; books and journals; lodging; public classes and workshops; facility rentals; lecture notes . . . and more. Go to http://www.calmarketplace.org

UC Berkeley NewsCenter. A web portal offering visitors up-to-the-minute news and features about all things UC Berkeley. Think of the online NewsCenter as a one-stop site for news, current events, calendar listings, and features — written, edited, and presented by a team of university editors, writers, and designers with their fingers on the pulse of the campus. Go to http://newscenter.berkeley.edu

And, don’t forget to bookmark:
The UC Berkeley Homepage. The granddaddy of them all. Start here and explore to find out just about everything there is to know about UC Berkeley and the wealth of information the campus offers on nearly every topic. Go to http://www.berkeley.edu

Bear in Mind
Once a month, UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl addresses the community with a webcast, interviewing campus newsmakers and concluding with an issue “on his mind.” Recently he interviewed Harry Kreisler, executive director of the Institute of International Studies, about U.S. foreign policy generally, and specifically regarding Iraq; senior Ankur Luthra about how to win a Rhodes scholarship; and Mary Ann Mason, dean of the Graduate Division, about graduate issues and her research on how having children affects faculty women’s tenure-track choices — and chances. Chancellor Berdahl then discussed the need for political discourse in the midst of the “war on terrorism.”

For current and past broadcasts of “Bear in Mind,” go to http://www.berkeley.edu/ news/chancellor/bim/index.html

Cal Baseball Youth Day
From home runs to hot dogs, Cal baseball offers classic pleasures. On Sunday, April 13, Cal Baseball Youth Day features a $1 admission for fans 17 and under. The game against Arizona State starts at 1 p.m. at Evans Field (next to Edwards Stadium; enter at Schlessinger Drive, off Oxford Street near Allston Way).

Campus Excess, Surplus and Salvage
Used oak desks, office chairs, file cabinets, chalk boards, card catalogues, lost and found bikes, and more are all available to the public through UC Berkeley’s Excess, Surplus and Salvage. This reuse/resale arm of the university collects and sells furniture, office equipment, computer and lab equipment and other items from campus departments. The goods are available to the public at the salvage store located at 1000 Folger St., two blocks south of Ashby Street, one block west of San Pablo Avenue. The store is open to the public on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

University Village development moving forward
The firm of Allen & O’Hara has been selected to head a team to develop a 26-acre mixed-use project at University Village, along San Pablo Avenue in Albany. The proposed project includes 587 units of rental housing for 1,034 graduate students and 30 units of rental housing for junior faculty at UC Berkeley. The project will also incorporate 70,000 square feet of commercial development, as well new community and administrative facilities. Recreational and open space features include park land, new Little League fields and the restoration of the two creeks that run through the site.

The next step is the preparation of an environmental impact report. Following the environmental review and approval by the UC Regents, groundbreaking is expected in 2004.

For information, call Jeff Bond, UC Capital Projects, at (510) 643-6869.
