Campus Construction Update

Davis Hall North Replacement/CITRIS Headquarters
Construction of a state-of-the-art replacement facility that will serve as the headquarters for the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) is under way on the north side of campus. Applications of CITRIS research include improvements to energy efficiency, transportation, environmental monitoring, seismic safety, education, cultural research and health care. The new building will include a large microfabrication laboratory, the administrative center for the CITRIS program, a distance learning facility, laboratories for collaborative research, a 149-seat auditorium and a cafe.

The facility's steel superstructure was completed in early March. Structural concrete for floors and walls will be the focus of construction this spring, as will installation of building utilities. The facility is scheduled for completion by spring 2009.

The sidewalk and metered parking on Hearst Avenue adjacent to the building site will remain closed for the duration of construction. Disabled parking and access in the area will be maintained. Hourly parking is available in the Lower Hearst Parking structure (no UC permit needed) located at Hearst and Scenic avenues.

Foothill Pedestrian Bridge
A pedestrian bridge across Hearst Avenue just east of Gayley Road will soon connect LaLoma and Foothill student housing. The bridge will provide direct, safe disabled access from residential units to the dining commons, mailroom and other support facilities. The steel bridge is being fabricated in Richmond, California, and is scheduled to be delivered to campus in late May. Installation is expected to take one day, although work to connect the bridge and its utilities will take an additional few weeks.

Stanley Biosciences and Bioengineering Facility
Stanley Hall brings new teaching and lab facilities to the campus that are especially designed for interdisciplinary collaboration. Faculty, researchers and staff from areas as diverse as Chemistry, Bioenginering and Physics will focus mainly on biomedical problems. Moving in, which began in early April, will continue through the summer.

A formal dedication of the new Stanley Hall is planned for fall.

Underhill Parking Structure and Playing Field
When completed, this project will include a 1,000-space parking structure. It will also provide a recreational field adjacent to student residences that can be used for a variety of sports. Construction will continue through fall 2007, although parking is scheduled to be available by the fall 2007 semester.

While the parking and playing field levels are complete, concrete pours continue in order to build interior walls. Installation of utilities and two newly built elevators is in progress. Painting the interior lower levels began in late April.

To allow room for emergency response vehicles adjacent to the project site, no parking is allowed at any time on the south side of Haste Street between College Avenue and Bowditch Street. The eastbound driving and bicycle lanes adjacent to the job site on Channing Way between College Avenue and Bowditch Street will remain closed through the summer.

General Information
Hours of construction on campus sites are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, although work generally finishes by 5 p.m. The projects adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff.
