Celebrating UC's birthday, chancellor's inauguration By Karen Holtermann Three days of celebrations and academic events will surround the April 15 ceremony inaugurating Robert J. Birgeneau as UC Berkeley’s ninth chancellor and celebrating the 137th anniversary of the founding of the University of California. The public is invited to inaugural festivities to be held Thursday through Saturday, April 14 to 16 — from symposia on hot topics to the formal inauguration ceremony itself. The celebration for Birgeneau, who took office in September, is timed to coincide with Cal Day, on Saturday, April 16. The theme of the inaugural events is “Frontiers of Knowledge, Frontiers of Education.” Free symposia on these themes, led by faculty experts, are open to the public. Festivities kick off on Thursday, April 14, with “Frontiers of Education,” on innovations in teaching, at 2 p.m. in the Berkeley Art Museum Theater. Friday’s program begins at 10 a.m. with “Frontiers of Knowledge,” at the Pacific Film Archive Theater, on leading-edge research in brain science, the origins of Arabic numerals, and more. The inaugural ceremony is at 2 p.m. in Zellerbach Hall; free tickets are available at the box office. Inaugural events on Saturday include discussions with faculty on five topics: “Are We Ready? The Fight Against Avian Flu, Bioterrorism, and Other Public Health Threats” (10 a.m.), “Winning Elections: Why and How the Republicans Win” (11 a.m.), “A Country of Immigrants: What Is an American?” (noon), “Working Women: Burnout, Babies, and Balance” (1 p.m.), and “Undergraduate Research: Nobelists in the Making,” (3 p.m.).
