Stanley Hall

The new Stanley Hall, completed this summer, serves as a hub for multidisciplinary research and teaching involving the biological sciences, physical sciences and engineering. The building is the UC Berkeley headquarters for the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3) and houses the Department of Bioengineering.

Teaching facilities include two auditoriums and two multi-media classrooms with state-of-the-art equipment. In addition, the building features a five-story atrium and a café that will be open by early 2008.

A dedication celebration for the new facility is scheduled for Saturday, September 29 from 1 to 4 pm. The event will be open to the public and will include lab tours and lectures. For more details, visit events.berkeley.edu and click on September. 29.

Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Science to Replace Warren Hall
Work has begun on a new research and teaching facility to replace Warren Hall, a 52-year-old building on the western edge of campus that is rated seismically poor and was judged too outmoded to retrofit. The Li Ka Shing Center will serve as a state-of-the-art research and learning space for biomedical scientific research at Berkeley, particularly in the area of stem cell biology.  The overarching goal of the center's research will be the study of the molecular basis for disease. Faculty members based in the center's laboratories will include experts in stem cell biology, neuroscience, cancer biology and infectious disease. This fall, underground utilities on the west side of campus will be upgraded to support this new building. Construction is set to begin in early 2008.

Foothill Pedestrian Bridge Complete

The Foothill Pedestrian Bridge, a covered connector to provide disabled access for student residents of the Foothill housing complex, was installed this summer. The addition of the pedestrian bridge Foothill Bridgebrought the housing facility into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provides all Foothill student housing residents, their classmates and guests with safe, equal and integrated access to the programs, services and activities offered in the dining commons and other support facilities.
