Cal's sports wow fans, with more to come

If you're the mayor, you get to man the remote, and Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates took on the task withy gusto last month, as his teammates from Cal;s 1959 Rose Bowl squad - the last Cal team to make the January 1 trip to Pasadena - gathered to watch the bash at Berkeley's Rose Garden Inn, and like everyone, the crowd was high on the Bears (despite No. 1 USC's final 23-17 vistory).  Cheering on a Cal first down (front row, from left) are Pat Newell, bill Patton, Mayor Bates, team co-captain Jack hart, and Bill Taylor.  Also rooting for the Bears (not shown) was '59 quarterback and co-captain Joe Kapp - who as Cal's coach from 1982-86 famously swore off tequila until the Bears win another Rose bowl berth.  There may be a margarita for him on New Year's Day.

It’s been a season to remember for Cal sports fans, with Jeff Tedford’s football team barreling toward a bowl berth and men’s and women’s teams in several sports holding onto spots in the top-25 rankings. Whether your sport is football or soccer, field hockey or water polo, tennis or golf, cross country or ice hockey, there has been good news to report for local fans.

The athletics “season” got under way even before school started, with student athletes and alumni winning 17 medals at the Olympic Games in Athens. UC Berkeley’s gold-medal-winning alumni were swimmer Natalie Coughlin (who took five medals); soccer star Joy Fawcett, mainstay of the U.S. team for years; and men’s eight rower Pete Cipollone.

In all, 110 Olympic athletes competed from University of California campuses. They won 35 medals in Athens, including 12 gold — if UC were a country, it would have placed 12th in the medal count.

With November upon us, action heats up in Haas Pavilion, as the basketball season gets under way. In their first exhibition games, Cal’s men topped Chico State, 80-53, and the women’s team defeated Baden Sports, 69-36.
