Under Construction
The Berkeley campus celebrated progress this fall with the completion of new student housing and new and seismically upgraded facilities for music study and performance.
Apartment-style housing for 228 students opened in August at Channing Way and Bowditch St.; the new Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library is open on the central campus, north of Hearst Gym; and seismic improvements are complete at Hertz Hall, site of the music department’s popular noon, evening, and weekend performances.
For details on the music library, see newscenter.berkeley.edu and search for “music library”; for a calendar of concerts at Hertz Hall, visit music.berkeley.edu/calendar.html
Ongoing Campus Projects
Units 1 and 2 Infill Student Housing
Three student residence halls are being added west of College Ave., on Durant Ave. and Channing Way (Unit 1), and on Haste St. (Unit 2). Apartment-style housing will also be added at Unit 2 on Dwight Way. The exteriors of all the buildings are complete, and work focuses on the interiors, a central courtyard, and landscaping. Unit 2 will open to students in January, the new Unit 1 buildings in fall 2005. For updates, visit www.housing.berkeley.edu/construction
Clark Kerr Campus, Building 10 Seismic Retrofit and Renovation
Located near the main Warring St. entrance to the residential Clark Kerr Campus, Building 10 includes a large dining hall, two smaller dining rooms, a serving area, and an institutional kitchen with storage spaces. The proj-ect will improve the building’s seismic rating and disabled access for diners and staff; it will also modernize the kitchen facilities and restore some of the original detailing, finishes, and landscapes of the historic structure.
Stanley Biosciences and Bioengineering Facility
At the campus’s east gate, this will be an interdisciplinary hub for science research and teaching as part of the campus’s Health Sciences Initiative and its interdisciplinary Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3). Work to build the basement levels of the facility is under way, and deliveries of steel to form the building’s frame are being made to the site. The new eight-story building is due to open in early 2006.
CITRIS Headquarters Building
Davis Hall North, the old portion of the civil engineering building located on campus near the intersection of Hearst and LeRoy Avenues, is being demolished to make way for a state-of-the-art headquarters for the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS). The building — with two floors underground and five floors above — will include flexible teaching and research facilities, a distance-learning center, and a nanofabrication lab.
Construction of is expected to continue through 2007. Street parking on the south side of Hearst Ave., from Euclid Ave. to LeRoy Ave., will not be available for the duration of construction. Hourly paid parking will continue to be available at existing metered spaces in the area and on Level 2 of the Lower Hearst parking structure (no UC permit needed), at Hearst and Scenic Avenues. Construction updates will be available online at www.cp.berkeley.edu/DavisCITRIS.html
2195 Hearst Avenue
The exterior and landscaping are complete for this new building at Hearst Ave. between Oxford and Walnut Streets. Construction on the interior of the building is now under way, with complete occupancy scheduled for the end of 2004. The building houses campus computing facilities and will provide temporary “surge” space to make room for campus units whose permanent facilities are undergoing seismic upgrades.
A note to the community: Pedestrian safety around campus construction sites is important. Please walk on sidewalks and designated paths only, not in the street next to construction fencing.
Work hours for campus construction projects are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends and holidays, in accordance with the city’s noise ordinance. All projects adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff.
