Under Construction

Campus construction continues to focus on providing additional student housing and making the campus more resistant to seismic activity. Some highlights:

Units 1 and 2 Infill Student Housing
The university is adding three residence halls west of College Ave. on Durant Ave. and Channing Way (Unit 1) and on Haste St. (Unit 2). Apartment-style housing will also be added at Unit 2 on Dwight Way.

Construction of the towers at both units continues story by story, with concrete poured first to form the floor and then to build the walls of each story. The exteriors are expected to be completed by May 2004 at Unit 2 and by the end of summer 2004 at Unit 1.

The concrete pours will necessitate occasional one-day road closures — detour routes will be clearly marked. For details and updates on these projects, visit www.housing. berkeley.edu/construction

Channing-Bowditch Student Housing
Construction of additional housing at Channing Way and Bowditch St. continues, with framing of the building and installation of utilities. This apartment-style housing is expected to open to student residents in August 2004.

Stanley Biosciences and Bioengineering Facility
Located at the east gate of the campus, this new building will be an interdisciplinary hub for science research and teaching as part of the campus Health Sciences Initiative.

Excavation for the three underground levels of the new building is expected to continue into October, followed by construction of the basement walls and installation of building systems and utilities. The new eight-story facility is due to open in 2006.

Lower Hearst Parking
This project converts the top level of the parking structure at Hearst and Scenic Aves. to parking, adding more than 100 spaces for campus faculty, staff, and students.

Construction is expected to begin in September and will continue until mid-
December.

Seismic Replacement Building
The shell of the building and surrounding landscaping at Hearst Ave. between Oxford St. and Walnut St. are scheduled to be complete by late October. Construction on the interior of the building will continue in preparation for occupancy by various campus departments in summer 2004.

The facility will house campus units that are temporarily displaced by seismic retrofitting programs in other campus buildings.

A note to the community: Pedestrian safety around campus construction sites is very important! Please walk on sidewalks and designated paths only, not in the street next to construction fencing.

The work hours for campus construction projects are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends and holidays, in accordance with the city of Berkeley noise ordinance.

All projects will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff. For questions about these or other campus construction projects, call UC Berkeley Capital Projects, (510) 643-4793.
