Under Construction
As the campus continues to make progress on housing projects on the southside, seismic retrofit work and other construction projects continue. Here are some highlights.

Central Dining and Office Facility
Construction on this new dining commons and office has been underway since last summer. The steel frame is up, with windows and walls being added in the next few months. The new dining commons is on schedule to start serving students in Spring 2003.

Southside Projects
An open house featuring the Underhill Area projects was held March 11. It provided information on new southside student housing projects (at Units 1 and 2 and at College/Durant and Channing/Bowditch); the Central Dining and Office Facility; and the planned parking facility and recreational field. The Units 1 and 2 infill housing and Channing/Bowditch projects were approved by the UC Regents in March. Construction preparation will begin this summer at Unit 2, which is bounded by College Avenue, Bowditch Street, Haste Street and Dwight Way.

Memorial Stadium
As an initial step toward the overall strengthening of Memorial Stadium, the press box will be removed and replaced with a temporary one. This temporary facility will accommodate the public address box, scoreboard controls, and TV, radio and camera positions. Demolition of the press box begins in April. The project is scheduled for completion in August 2002.

Goldman School of Public Policy
An addition to the Goldman School of Public Policy is being built to the west of the historic building that houses the school. The new building will add faculty offices, classrooms and lecture space in a 13,000 square foot facility. Construction will be finished late this spring, and staff will move into the new building during the summer.

Oxford Tract
The new Insectary and Greenhouse buildings are complete, and initial work has begun in preparation for construction of the Seismic Replacement Building at the south end of the site, along Hearst, between Oxford and Virginia Streets. This new building will house staff, faculty and students temporarily moved from other campus buildings that are being seismically retrofitted. Demolition of the old insectary building is scheduled to begin in mid-April.

Barker Hall
Seismic retrofit work on Barker Hall, located near the corner of Oxford Street and Hearst Avenue, is in its final phase. Exterior and blasting is scheduled to start April 22 and last approximately one month. The contractor will make every effort to mitigate dust from this activity. Per campus guidelines, this work will be monitored continuously by campus site inspectors. While the seismic construction at Barker Hall is nearing an end, lab renovations continue and nearby utilities work necessitates the continued closure of the right lane of Hearst Avenue.
