Spring 2001

Under Construction

The following campus facilities on the edge of the central campus or on outlying properties are now in construction or scheduled to start soon:

Etcheverry Hall
This project involves a complete roof replacement, some exterior concrete repair and waterproofing. The project is scheduled to begin in mid-April and will last through the summer. Work will begin at 8 a.m. and end by 5 p.m., weekdays only.

Goldman School of Public Policy
Construction on the new western addition, which will house faculty offices, classrooms and lecture halls, is expected to begin in early April. The first phase will involve soil grading and dirt removal. Construction work will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., weekdays only.

Barker Hall
The seismic retrofit and upgrade of Barker Hall is under way and will be completed by Spring 2002. For safety reasons, the crosswalk across Hearst Avenue east of the Hearst/Oxford intersection has been removed for the duration of the project, and the right-turn lane from Oxford onto Hearst will remain closed during construction. Bus and shuttle stops have been relocated.

Oxford Tract Insectary
A small insectary at the Oxford Tract, bordered by Hearst Avenue and Walnut Street, will be replaced with a new building on the site. Construction of the new insectary will begin in Summer 2001. The insectary is the first phase of the Seismic Replacement Building 1 project, which will occupy the south end of the Oxford Tract along Hearst Avenue, and will house staff, faculty and students who are displaced while campus buildings are being seismically retrofitted.

Underhill Area Projects
In November 2000, the UC Regents reviewed and approved designs for the Central Dining and Office Facility and the College-Durant Student Housing, the first of the Underhill Area Projects, which will add housing for 900 students, a seismically safe dining facility, administrative offices, parking for up to 1,000 vehicles, and a playing field.

Site preparation for a new Central Dining and Office Facility on Bowditch between Channing and Haste is expected to start in Spring 2001. The building currently on this site will be demolished in April to make way for the new facility, which is expected to be completed by October 2002.

New student housing at the the corner of College and Durant avenues will include 30 apartments with two to six, single occupancy bedrooms. Construction will begin in Spring 2001, to be completed in Summer 2002. For safety reasons, the sidewalks along College and Durant avenues will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be re-routed. Portions of the parking lanes on both streets will be fenced off for construction staging. The bus stop at the top of Durant Avenue will be temporarily relocated farther west on Durant Avenue.

Construction of a new access ramp from Channing Way to the Underhill Parking Lot is under way. The sidewalk along the south side of Channing Way will be closed to pedestrian traffic until Summer 2001, when the improvements are completed.

Berkeley Art Museum
The Berkeley Art Museum, located on Bancroft Avenue, will undergo a seismic retrofit starting in April 2001. The museum galleries will close on May 28 and reopen in stages during the Fall 2001 semester. The Pacific Film Archive has moved to a temporary building on the main campus near the intersection of Bancroft and Bowditch.

All projects will adhere to strict regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes and stormwater runoff. If you have questions or concerns about campus construction, visit
