Cal Neighbors

A newsletter for neighbors of the University of California, Berkeley

Spring 2001

"There is no medium like a book to stimulate the imagination," UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl said at the opening of Berkeley High's interim library March 22, almost a year after a fire destroyed the school's library. Berdahl arrived at the festivities pulling a cart of his own books to donate to a book drive organized by Professor June Jordan. Jordan, who has brought Cal students to the high school under the auspices of her program Poetry for the People, hopes to collect 1,000 donated books. Many will be used to supplement classroom collections, which have assumed greater importance due to the constricted size of the school's interim library.

To support the book drive, call Cal's Poetry for the People at 642-2743.
