Celebrate spring on Saturday, April 21, as UC Berkeley opens its doors at Cal Day 2001.

The open house features special exhibits, faculty lectures, athletic events, musical, dance and dramatic performances and campus tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Between 35,000 and 40,000 current and prospective students, families, alumni, and community members are expected. Join them! There will be something for everyone.

If you like to jumpstart your morning, you'll have a chance to get your juices flowing with the 3K, 5K and 10K "Run for Life," which kicks off at 8 a.m. Participants will walk or run around the campus perimeter, ending at Edwards Stadium. Proceeds from the $25 entry fee will be donated to Bay Area schools and participating youth groups.

A variety of information booths are included at the Information Marketplace, located between Sproul and Dwinelle Plazas. Many campus organizations and departments will provide information on their activities and programs; community booths will feature cultural resources, shopping areas, visitor attractions, and city services.

For the first time, community groups will perform during Cal Day. Find them in front of Dwinelle Plaza:
  • Capoiera Arts Academy
  • Jefferson Elementary School Lion and Fan Dance troupes
  • Caribbean Steel Band, Longfellow Middle School of Arts and Technology
  • Berkeley High School Ballet Folklórico
  • The Jazzschool Brazilian Ensemble.

Children have a special place at Cal Day. They can see the three-story Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton in the Valley Life Sciences Building, learn all about insect life at the Essig Museum of Entomology, and participate in hands-on learning in the physics, archaeology, engineering, nutrition and paleontology labs and at Lawrence Hall of Science. The Berkeley Art Museum will host art projects, music, storytelling and tours at Family Day: Arts 2001. A games area will be set up on campus for young children.

Families, teachers and students are invited to the Kindergarten to College resource fair - a new addition this year - to learn how to prepare early for college. The popular Children's Literature Festival will offer talks with authors, displays, and books for sale.

Throughout the day, world-class faculty will give lectures. Hear UC Berkeley's newest Nobel Laureate, Daniel McFadden, discuss "Economic Choices." Or learn "How the Brain Gets Wired Up," presented by Molecular & Cell Biology Professor Corey Goodman. Fascinated by the mysteries of astronomy? Drop in on Professor Alex Filippenko's lecture, "Heart of Darkness: The Search for Black Holes."

For the most convenient access to campus, use BART or AC Transit bus lines. At BART's downtown Berkeley station, catch a free Cal Day cable car with on-board student guides. Shuttles will also run to the Lawrence Hall of Science, Samuel L. Silver Space Sciences Laboratory, and Botanical Garden. Parking is free in many designated campus parking lots; however, space is limited.

Visit
www.berkeley.edu/calday for a complete schedule of Cal Day activities. A printed program guide will be available at information tables throughout the campus on Cal Day.
