Cal Water Polo on top

Number two in the nation last year, the Cal water polo program has registered an 1100-404-14 record (.729) since its charter season in 1918-winning an NCAA-record 11 national championships.

This year Cal's strong team is shooting for the top again under the leadership of new coach and former Cal player Kirk Everist, a two-time Olympian and 1988 NCAA National Player of the Year.

Watch for junior Attila Banhidy, a native of Hungary, who led the team in scoring last year with 33 goals. Banhidy was also one of four Cal Bears named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

Academic All-Conference team, citing excellence in the classroom and in the pool. Also honored by the federation was senior Russell Bernstein, who was Cal's chief goalie in 2001. Bernstein played in all 22 matches, stopping 132 shots to establish a 5.29 goals-against-average.
