Under Construction
Two new campus facilities were completed this summer. The Goldman School of Public Policy moved into a new building, adjacent to its historic home on Hearst and LeRoy Aves. On the southside of the campus, new student housing was completed at College and Durant Aves. with apartment-style units for upper division undergraduates and new graduate students.

The rededication of Hearst Memorial Mining Building, the historic architectural gem of the campus, is scheduled for September 22. The building has undergone restoration and seismic retrofitting utilizing state-of-the-art base isolation technology,

As a new academic year gets under way, construction to add more student housing and to upgrade campus facilities continues. Some highlights follow:

Southside Student Housing
The University is adding three residence halls along Durant Avenue, Channing Way, and Haste Street. Apartment-style housing will be added along Dwight Way. Construction at Unit II began this summer. Demolition of the dining commons, located in the center of the Unit II and rated seismically 'poor,' will begin in November. Work to add two new buildings on Channing Way and Durant Ave. at Unit I is expected to begin in December. For details and updates on these projects, visit www.housing.berkeley.edu/constCentral Dining and Office Facility

Construction of a new southside dining facility on Bowditch St. between Channing and Haste continues. Student meal service at the facility is expected to begin in January 2003.

Seismic Replacement Building
A Seismic Replacement Building (SRB) at Hearst between Oxford and Walnut Sts., will house staff, faculty, and students temporarily moved from other campus buildings that are being seismically retrofitted. Construction of the new building continues with site grading, foundation and utilities work, and the start of structural steel installation this fall. The sidewalk along Hearst will remain closed for the duration of construction. The building is expected to be complete in fall 2003.

Lawrence Hall of Science
"Forces that Shape the Bay," a new interactive display at the Lawrence Hall of Science, is scheduled to open this fall. Check www.lhs.berkeley.edu for information on the event opening.

All projects will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, and storm-water runoff. Direct questions about these or other campus construction projects to UC Berkeley Capital Projects, (510)
