University Toasts Community Partnerships

The Low Vision Clinic is one of 14 partnerships between the university and the community that were honored by Chancellor and Mrs. Robert Berdahl at a campus reception on September 23. This is the third year UC Berkeley has recognized "unique and creative" partnerships that draw on the expertise of the university and the commitment of the community to improve the quality of life of local residents.

The other groups to be honored this year are:

Cal Adventures Community Outreach, which for over two decades has taught thousands of children and youth sailing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, and more, enticing them to discover the great outdoors while developing leadership and self-esteem.

The Cal in Berkeley Student Internship program, dedicated to connecting UC Berkeley students with project-based internships in the city of Berkeley and local community-based organizations.

The Center for Popular Education and Participatory Research, promoting the participation of everyday people - especially the poor, youth, immigrants, and people of color - in education and democracy. Among other achievements, the center has helped research and evaluate the small school reforms in Oakland and worked with the Youth Together Project in Oakland.

The City of Berkeley YouthWorks Program, placing local teens in summer jobs on the Berkeley campus with mentoring and job training from UC staff.

The UC student-initiated Community Circuits, addressing the "digital divide" by teaching underprivileged fourth and fifth graders computer skills and helping to staff afterschool computer labs for Richmond and Berkeley teenagers.

The Community Economic Development Clinic, connecting UC Berkeley faculty and students with local neighborhood activists on development issues in West Oakland.

The Cypress Mandela/Labor Occupational Health and Safety Program, incorporating a health and safety component into the successful Cypress Mandela Women in Skilled Trades Pre-apprenticeship program.

The Environmental Science Teaching Program, working to increase the UC-eligible population of economically disadvantaged students by teaching and mentoring urban students in hands-on science.

Safe Student Housing Program. Following the tragic deaths of two UC students two years ago, the city of Berkeley and the university joined forces to increase fire safety awareness among students and other tenants and provide safety inspections of vacant rental housing.

The Southside Community Safety Partnership, bringing the city, university staff and students, and the broader southside community together to address crime and safety issues.

School Change through School Gardens, a project of the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, responding to the growing interest in school gardens by creating garden-based teaching units for local elementary and middle schools.

Providing Access to Vision Care for Mobility-Restricted Patients, another UC Berkeley School of Optometry program, providing home visits to hundreds of local elderly patients in the past two years.

Empowering Generation NeXt Tutoring Program, a Cal student-run afterschool program at James Kenney Recreation Center in Berkeley.
