Under Construction
The following campus facilities on the edge of the central campus or on outlying properties are now in construction or scheduled to start soon:
Barker Hall
The
Barker Hall seismic retrofit and upgrade is underway and will be completed
by summer 2002. Exterior demolition and major excavation are now in
progress. Noisy work will start no earlier than 8 a.m. and finish no
later than 5 p.m., weekdays only. For safety reasons, the crosswalk
mid-block across Hearst Avenue - east of the Hearst/Oxford intersection
- has been removed for the duration of the project, and the right-turn
lane from Oxford onto Hearst will remain closed during construction.
Bus and shuttle stops have been temporarily relocated.
UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive
The temporary partial seismic retrofit of the art museum, located on Bancroft Way, should be completed in September 2001, when the museum
galleries and café will re-open to the public. Work in the museum
garden will continue into October. The Pacific Film Archive remains
at its temporary building on the main campus near the intersection of
Bancroft and Bowditch.
Etcheverry Hall
This project involves a complete roof replacement, some exterior concrete repair, painting and waterproofing. Roof work is expected to be finished in October 2001. Access to the alley on the west side of Etcheverry is restricted. Construction work is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays only.
Goldman School of Public Policy
Construction has begun on the new western addition, which will house faculty offices, classrooms and lecture halls. Traffic is now one-way southbound on LeRoy Avenue between Hearst and Ridge for the duration of the construction, scheduled for completion in spring 2002. Work will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., weekdays only.
Lawrence Hall of Science - "Forces That Shape The Bay" Exhibit
An interactive exhibit on the geologic, climatic, human and marine forces that have created the San Francisco Bay is under construction on the south terrace of the Lawrence Hall of Science. The exhibit is scheduled to open in spring 2002. Construction is not expected to have a significant impact on traffic or parking.
Oxford Tract Insectary and Greenhouse
Bordered by Hearst Avenue and Walnut Street, these new facilities are being built now, replacing existing ones. Construction is expected to be completed in November 2001. The existing insectary and greenhouse, home to researchers from the College of Natural Resources, will remain in operation until the replacement facilities are completed. Street parking will not be affected in the vicinity. This work is the first phase of the Seismic Replacement Building project, which will house staff, faculty and students who are displaced while campus buildings are being seismically retrofitted.
People's Park
A project to control erosion and improve drainage, safety and accessibility along the north end of the park begins in September, with completion scheduled before the rainy season. Use of the basketball court will be temporarily interrupted during construction. Further information will be posted at the park or can be obtained by calling (510) 643-2796.
Underhill Area Projects
The
following are part of the Underhill Area Projects,
which will add housing for 1,000 students and replace seismically
vulnerable structures with a central dining commons, administrative offices, parking for up to 1,000 vehicles and a playing field.
- Central Dining and Office Facility. Site preparation has begun on a new, seismically safe dining facility at Bowditch Street and Channing Way, which will serve students living in nearby residence halls and will be built to sustainable standards to allow its use for the community following a major earthquake. Completion is expected in fall 2002.
- College-Durant Student Housing. New housing on the corner of College and Durant Avenues is on track to open to students in fall 2002. For safety reasons, the sidewalk along College and Durant has
been closed and pedestrian traffic re-routed. Portions of the parking lanes on both streets are fenced off for construction staging. The bus stop at the top of Durant has been temporarily relocated farther west on Durant.
- Underhill Parking Lot. Construction of the new Channing Way access ramp to the Underhill Lot has been completed. The lot has also been altered to accommodate construction of the new dining facility. The entrance on Haste will be permanently closed, and overall parking capacity in the lot will be reduced during construction. Plans are to rebuild the parking structure and replace a rooftop recreation area.
All campus projects will adhere to strict regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes and storm water runoff. If you have questions about campus construction, visit www.cp.berkeley.edu or call UC Berkeley Capital Projects at (510) 643-4793.
