Chancellor honors university-community partnerships

Nine "University-Community Partnerships" will be honored by Chancellor and Mrs. Robert Berdahl at a campus reception September 25. This is the second year UC Berkeley has recognized partnerships that link the expertise and commitment of campus and community groups and local agencies to improve the quality of life of local residents.

The partnerships were selected by a committee of faculty and staff, working with Peg Berdahl, who suggested the idea of an annual recognition event that would honor collaborations between the campus and community.

In addition to the Parents' Guide (featured in this issue), the other groups honored this year are:

The Suitcase Clinic, a student-run program that offers health care, medicine, vision screening, legal advice other services free to low-income and homeless persons.

Stiles Hall Mentoring Program, which has paired low-income students of color with Cal student mentors for over 70 years.

Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas, a partnership between UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and local health agencies to protect young children in the rural farming communities of the Salinas Valley from pesticide exposure.

English Language Development Project, a partnership between UC Berkeley's School of Education and Oakland's Melrose Elementary School to develop curricula and train teachers of bilingual classrooms.

Interactive University Project, which creates online connections between local K-12 schools and UC Berkeley resources.

Juvenile Hall Literacy Collaborative, bringing Cal student literacy tutors into the Juvenile Court Schools of Alameda County.

Campus/West Berkeley Neighborhood Partnership, linking UC Berkeley faculty and students and the West Berkeley Neighborhood Development Corporation in planning improvements in West Berkeley, including a new open air market.

East Bay Community Law Center, featured in the Spring 2001 issue of Cal Neighbors, which provides legal assistance to low-income and vulnerable populations in the East Bay.
